Happy New Year Update Part II

Check out the new ceilings my friends !!! I am so happy to finally be doing some finish work. Up until this time everything has been structural and rot repair. All very important but none of it shows. With the ceilings I'm able to combine structural enhancements with finish work because I am adding 1"x 6" Oak joists to the existing 2"x 4" pieces to beef them up. We plan on spending a lot of time on the exterior decks above the cabins and I didn't feel the existing design was sufficient as evidenced by the way the old rooftop air conditioner units caused the ceilings to sag.

Here's a shot of the bedroom ceiling with 2" rigid insulation installed. The original construction had no insulation.
Notice the 1x6 oak sistered on to the 2x4.

Here's another angle.

Now this next shot shows the 1/4" oak plywood installed between the 1x6's.
The section in the middle is removable for access to wiring and whatever else we decide to install in the ceilings.
Once the plywood was installed I fastened 1/2" x 3" oak baseboard turned upside down on to the oak which showed below the level of the ceiling. This gives a very nice beam detail to the exposed oak joist. The trim piece which covers the seam for the removable panel was made from the remainder of the baseboard because I had to rip that down to about 1 3/4".

Here's another angle.

And here's one more for good measure.

It feels so good to have some finish work done. We are planning on coating the ceilings with a white "pickling" type stain but I need to fill nails and sand before that step.

More exciting updates to come once I get back out to work so stay tuned and I appreciate your comments.

Hang to the riggins!!!

Wado
